A 12-year-old boy is dead and an 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after they fell through the ice at a park in Albany, New York on Saturday.
Albany Police were called to Washington Square Park around 4:35 p.m. for reports that several youths had fallen through the ice near the park’s lake house.
Officials located the girl, who was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where she is in critical condition, police said.
The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team found the boy’s body several hours later.
Albany police believe he fell through the ice while trying to walk to the lake house. Police believe the girl tried to help him, but also fell through the ice.
Police have not released their names because of their ages.
Both children were students at North Albany Middle School, according to the Albany City School District.
“Our thoughts go out to the families of these students during this incredibly difficult time,” Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said in a statement. “This is a terrible tragedy and we are grieving as a school community.”
