15-year-old drowns at Shaver Lake. Friends tried to help the teen, Fresno officers said

A 15-year-old drowned at Shaver Lake on Sunday afternoon, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to the lake at 12:30 p.m. to reports of the teen falling from a pontoon boat at the popular Sierra Nevada recreation spot.

Lt. Joe Smith said the teen was on the boat with friends when he got out and was subsequently separated from a personal flotation device before going underwater.

His friends tried to get him to the surface but couldn’t see through the water, Smith said.

Officers were nearby on a boat and quickly arrived on the scene, but were unable to find the teen.

“Emergency services were on scene long enough that they could see the young animal below the surface of the water, but he had been underwater for almost an hour,” Smith said.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered the body, Smith said.
