Thanks to a statewide inaugural event, this Saturday may be the best time to adopt a new pet.

The event, organized by the California Animal Welfare Association, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, aims to make pet adoption affordable and accessible while raising awareness about reception centres.

“California shelters are under enormous pressure due to overcrowding, as the number of animals entering shelters exceeds the number leaving,” said Jill Tucker, CEO of CalAnimals. “By increasing demand for adoption and encouraging families ready for pets to visit their local shelter first, we can make a change.”

More than 150 animal shelters, including Los Angeles Animal Services facilities, will participate in the first-ever California Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday, June 1. The nonprofits will pay all adoption costs to help reach the goal.

The SF SPCA said there are 2,024 animals available for adoption across all participating shelters.

“Shelters in California and across the country are facing an overpopulation crisis that requires the support and cooperation of state and local organizations working with communities to help our most vulnerable animals,” said ASPCA President Matt Bershadker. “The lifesaving impact of our collective efforts will be felt by the animals, participating organizations and communities across the state.”

All cats and dogs are sterilized or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
