17-year-old carjacker strikes and kills 23-year-old veteran, Oklahoma police say

A 17-year-old in a stolen car was the subject of a chase across the county when he struck a mother and her 23-year-old daughter as they drove on the highway, Oklahoma police said.

According to the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office and KOTV, the teen had stolen three vehicles within 24 hours and said he would “take a life” to steal a car.

The high-speed chase began Oct. 20 in Craig County and continued into Roger’s County, deputies said. They eventually found the vehicle crashed in a ditch, officials said.

Dispatchers then received a 911 call from a person saying their truck, containing a handgun, had just been stolen, officers said. Officers eventually found the teen driving the stolen truck along a country road.

The teen initially avoided the stop sticks thrown by officers, but punctured three tires when officers later threw the sticks.

With flat tires, the 17-year-old drove over railroad tracks and struck a vehicle with the mother and daughter inside, officers said. Logan Harrell, a 23-year military veteran, died at the scene, according to a news release and her obituary.

Her mother was injured and taken to the hospital, police said.

Harrell served in Kuwait for six months while in the military from 2019 to 2023, according to her obituary. She also studied elementary education and cheer at Rogers State College.

“Logan enjoyed being with her family, going shopping, wearing her Crocs and teaching and assisting other cheerleaders in the area,” her obituary said.

The teen accused of killing her was charged Oct. 25 with murder, endangering others while attempting to elude a police officer, theft of a car and other offenses, court records show.

Information about the teen’s attorney was not listed. McClatchy News is not naming the suspect because he is a minor.

Deputies told KOTV that the teen was chased in three different states and was traveling from Missouri to California on a crime spree.

“He had committed a home invasion near Republic, Missouri, where he intended to kill the homeowner, a former mentor,” Sheriff Scott Walton told KOTV.
