A 17-year-old boy from northern Germany has been sentenced to four years in juvenile detention for his role in a planned attack on a Christmas market, a court spokesman said on Friday.
He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, a spokesman for the Neuruppin district court announced.
During the closed session, the Public Prosecution Service’s accusations were largely confirmed, the spokesperson said.
The suspect, a Chechen, had become increasingly radical and had arranged with a 15-year-old accomplice to obtain a truck and use it to kill as many people as possible at the Christmas market in Leverkusen-Opladen in West Germany.
The younger accomplice had previously been sentenced to four years in prison by the Cologne court for his part in the planned attack.
They were both arrested late last year. Because they were minors at the time of the crime, the interrogations took place behind closed doors.
The verdict of the district court in Neuruppin is not final, as the suspect and the public prosecutor can appeal.
