The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation held a graduation ceremony at Mission Memorial Auditorium honoring 18 graduates of Basic Corrections Recruit Class 24-04.

Corrections Department offers competitive salary and career opportunities

After being rebranded from the Department of Public Safety, the DCR graduated four classes of corrections officers, reduced the recruit course from eleven weeks to eight weeks, and doubled the number of graduating classes.

The recruits completed more than 300 hours of classroom and physical training to cover behavioral health, crisis intervention, mental health, first aid and more.

Officials said each new class receives both Recruit Field Training and Basic Corrections Training.

They then get a taste of their work by entering the facility under the supervision of their training sergeants.

Currently, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation needs 380 ACOs out of 1,500 authorized ACO positions. Each graduating class helps address this staffing shortage in Hawaii facilities.

We continue our diligent efforts to fill ACO vacancies. This graduating class (BCRC 24-04) reflects those efforts.

Tommy Johnson, DCR Director

“The Department’s mission is to provide a safe correctional environment for comprehensive rehabilitative, holistic, comprehensive reentry services, including culture-based approaches, for individuals sentenced to our custody and care. Our goal is to reduce recidivism and generational incarceration and enhance the safety and security of our communities,” the DCR said in a press release.
