For purists, swapping an LS V8 into a Mustang is a transgression, but putting a BMW V8 into this 1968 Shelby GT500 is a sin that cannot be forgiven. Yet that’s exactly the kind of Frankenstein creation on display in this video from South Africa.
This is one of the strangest structures we have ever seen.
The engine was donated by a BMW E92 M3. Some would say this is a great mill, others think it is overrated and not as good as some other M3 engines. It seems enough for the lightweight classic pony car.
There is a surprising amount of mystery surrounding this build. The reviewer says the dealer who has it for sale knows nothing about who built it or when, or how it came to be. Is this apparently a thing in South Africa? We don’t really know.
He finds that not everything works well or even at all in the car. Whoever put it together just cobbled some things together in an improvised manner, with some parts wobbling. The reviewer says that when pushing the Bimmer GT500 through corners, it becomes squirrely. And his power window doesn’t even go down.
Of course, some BMW interior components had to be transplanted into the Shelby to get everything working properly. This means that the cabin looks nothing like the original, which further underlines the restomod status of this GT500. Some hate such things and prefer faithful restorations. We like it.
Don’t forget, this car will also get some BMW purists all excited. After all, the engine is probably considered too good to fit in a Ford, making the build complete nonsense or other nonsense.
The guy doing this review says the build drives “exactly like an E92 M3 should drive.” Still, it looks like a ’68 Shelby GT500.
