Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday after lightning struck a tree near a home along a golf course hosting the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.

The house is just north of the fifth green at TPC River Highlands, where the tournament is held a week after the US Open.

Cromwell police received 911 calls about a lightning strike around 4:30 p.m. When first responders arrived, they found a tree that had been hit and three people near it.

Cromwell Fire Department Chief Jason Brade said in a statement that an emergency medical crew treated two people and took them to hospital for further evaluation. He did not elaborate on their condition. A third person refused treatment.

Weather postponed the third round of the Travelers Championship, where Cameron Young shot a 59 earlier in the day for the PGA Tour’s first sub-60 round in four years. At one point, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for a region just north of Cromwell on Saturday afternoon.

Lightning is an ever-present hazard on golf courses. In 2019, six people were injured when a strike hit a 65-foot pine tree during the Tour Championship.
