2 Waterloo police officers are shot; suspect is shot dead during incident on Sunday morning

Two Waterloo police officers were shot on Sunday morning, after which police fatally shot the man involved, according to a police news release.

Police responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 200 block of Manson Street about 8:22 a.m., police said. The shooting happened in the 1200 block of East Fourth Street. It is unclear how the shooting unfolded, but the press release states that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two police officers were taken to a local hospital, the news release said. The officers underwent surgery but were expected to survive, the Waterloo Courier reported.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The Courier reported that the suspect’s mother arrived on the scene and spoke with police and Mayor Quentin Hart.

“I just wanted to stay here long enough for them to get my baby’s body off the ground, and I did,” the mother told the Courier. “They said he ran through the park and the police tasered him, and they say my son ended up shooting two police officers while he was on the ground.”

The Des Moines Police Department posted a message in support of the Waterloo officers and the department with a caption that reads, “We stand with you.” The message also says, “The men and women of the DMPD offer their support and stand with the fellow officers, family and friends of the Waterloo Police Department officers who were shot in the line of duty today.

“Prayers for a speedy recovery.”
