2024 Olympic Games Day 13 Results: Team USA Beats Serbia, Noah Lyles Wins Bronze Despite COVID Diagnosis

While several Americans dominated on the court Thursday, Team USA narrowly survived a scare on the men’s basketball court that nearly ended a dominant era in the sport.

From multiple medals to a world record bronze medal and even a COVID-19 infection: these are the biggest stories from Thursday at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

It took Stephen Curry a wild night and a 17-point comeback, but Team USA has a shot at a fifth straight gold medal on Saturday.

The United States came back to defeat Nikola Jokic and Serbia 95-91 in a semifinal on Thursday night in Paris. Curry scored an Olympic career-high 36 points with nine 3-pointers in the win, while LeBron James added a triple-double to lead Team USA out of a huge hole that nearly stunned the Americans for the first time since the 2004 Games.

Jokić and Serbia will now face Germany in the bronze medal game on Saturday, while the United States will face Victor Wembanyama and France in a rematch of the gold medal game from the Tokyo Olympics. Team USA also defeated France there for their fourth straight gold medal.

Despite starting the race as the favorite, American Noah Lyles finished third in the men’s 200 meters final on Thursday, leaving the track in a wheelchair.

Lyles tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week and is isolating at a hotel near the Olympic Village.

Lyles, who won the men’s 100-meter final in a wild finish earlier this week, attempted a rare Olympic sprint double in the men’s 200-meter final. Lyles finished behind Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and American Kenny Bednarek.

He said he “still wanted to run” in the final after making his semifinal on Wednesday. After finishing in 19.70 seconds, Lyles said he felt “dizzy” and had chest pains and shortness of breath. He was eventually taken off the track in a wheelchair, but he said a few hours later he was feeling much better.

“I was able to catch my breath and come to my senses,” he said.

On Thursday evening, Lyles announced that he will not compete in Friday’s men’s 4×100-meter relay final due to his diagnosis.

Lyles may have walked away with just the bronze, but elsewhere at the Stade de France, several of his American teammates added to the country’s gold medal tally with huge victories, most notably Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s incredible run to gold in the 400m hurdles. McLaughlin-Levrone set a world record of 50.37 seconds, with compatriot Anna Cockrell taking silver and Netherlands’ Femke Bol taking bronze.

In the long jump, Tara Davis-Woodhall won her first Olympic medal — a gold — after a leap of 7.10 meters. Germany’s Malaika Mihambo took silver and America’s Jasmine Moore bronze, impressively becoming only the second woman in Olympic history to win a medal in the triple jump and the long jump at the same Games.

And in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Grant Holloway took home the gold after winning silver in Tokyo. Daniel Roberts of Team USA took silver and Rasheed Broadbell of Jamaica took bronze.

It took five sets and a great rally, but the US women’s volleyball team is on its way to gold medal contention.

The United States defeated Brazil 3-2 in a semifinal in Paris in a thrilling match that nearly eluded the Americans in the final few points. Brazil even pulled within two points in the final set before the U.S. scored three of the final four points to decide the match and secure its place in the final.

The Americans, who defeated Brazil to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics, will face Italy in the final. The Italians swept Turkey 3-0 in their semifinal.

While the volleyball team made it, the women’s water polo team faded in the semifinals. Australia defeated the United States in a penalty shootout, taking a 14-13 victory to advance to the gold medal match. That ended a dominant run for the Americans, who had won gold in the past three games.

Australia and Spain will play for the gold medal on Saturday, while Team USA and the Netherlands will play for the bronze medal.

Sam Watson broke his own world record climbing a nearly 50-foot wall, but somehow he didn’t win a gold medal.

The 18-year-old American improved his world record time in the speed climbing bronze medal match on Thursday after narrowly missing out on a shot at gold. Watson scaled the wall in 4.74 seconds on his final run.

Although Watson set the world record in the quarter-finals, he finished 0.08 seconds behind China’s Peng Wu, who eventually finished second to Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo in the final.

Although Watson climbed the wall faster than any human, it still wasn’t enough to take home the gold medal.

The rhythmic gymnastics got underway on Thursday, which led to some incredible floor performances — including two from Germany’s Darya Varfolomeev and Ukraine’s Taisiia Onofriichuk set to classic Michael Jackson songs. Their routines were incredible. Check them out:

Varfolomeev finished the day second in qualifying, just behind Italy’s Sofie Raffaeli. Onofriichuk, 16, also advanced to the final after finishing fourth.

Katie Ledecky and Nick Mead officially close the Olympic Games for the United States.

Team USA announced Thursday that Ledecky and Mead will carry the American flag during the closing ceremonies.

Ledecky won four medals at the Games, bringing her total medal count to 14, making her the most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time.

Mead previously won gold in Paris in the coxless four-wheeler, marking the first time in 64 years that Team USA had won gold in this event.

The closing ceremony begins at 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
