A leak in a propane tank in East Hollywood prompted the evacuation of people in a nearby building Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Hazardous materials specialists and firefighters responded to a 500-gallon tank leak near 437 North Vermont Avenue, a state office building, at 1 p.m. Los Angeles Fire Department officials said 25 people were evacuated. At American Career College, just across the street, everyone in the building was told to shelter in place, fire officials said.

All lanes along North Vermont Avenue, from Rosewood Avenue to Oakwood Avenue, were closed as a precaution.

By 2:30 p.m., firefighters had secured the scene, and a private contractor who had repaired the tank the day before plugged the leak. Everyone who had been evacuated from the area was allowed to return, and those who had been told to take shelter were no longer required to do so, authorities said.

The fire brigade reported that emergency services were still carrying out a number of tasks at that time.

No further details have been released by authorities.
