2nd person dead, charges increased in Cape Cod crash involving boat trailer and SUV, police say

A second person killed in an August crash on Cape Cod involving a boat trailer driver and an SUV involved in the fatal accident is facing more serious charges, law enforcement officials announced Monday.

Peter Richmond, 81, of Yarmouth Port, now faces a second count of manslaughter in connection with a crash in Yarmouth on the afternoon of Aug. 30, Yarmouth police said.

The second charge was filed in the recent death of Cornelius Allen Bottomley, 54, of Hanover. Bottomley’s 14-year-old nephew, John Hughan of Norwell, was killed in the crash.

Bottomley and Hughan were tending to the boat trailer on the side of North Main Street when it became dislodged due to a broken axle when Richmond struck the trailer from behind, hitting the family members, police said.

“The Yarmouth Police Department extends its condolences and deepest sympathies to the families affected by this tragic incident,” an updated statement on Facebook said.

It is not yet clear when Richmond will appear in court.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
