UPPER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — Three people were killed when a van crashed into the back of a truck and burst into flames Tuesday on the Route 1 Media Bypass in Delaware County.

The driver of a paratransit bus crashed into the back of a truck hauling a dumpster, causing the bus to burst into flames, a spokesman for the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office said.

The spokesperson added that all three dead were on the bus.

The driver of the bus died on the spot.

Passing drivers attempted to pull two people from the wreckage of the bus through the back door, but these victims were also pronounced dead.

The truck driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash was first reported just before 8 a.m.

Southbound traffic on the bypass was blocked all morning, Upper Providence Township police said. The road was expected to reopen around noon.
