49ers’ Hargrave likely out for season after suffering triceps injury originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave suffered a partially torn triceps on Sunday and will likely miss the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters during a telephone press conference Monday, adding insult to injury after the 49ers’ crushing 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
“It’s a big [loss]and I thought he had his best game yesterday,” Shanahan said. “I thought he was a huge factor. He really impacted the quarterback in that game and it’s a big loss, and he’s one of our better players. He’s definitely trending in the right direction and should have a great year.”
Shanahan also told reporters that quarterback Brock Purdy is having day-to-day back problems, while linebacker Dee Winters has an ankle injury that has been aggravated.
Purdy underwent an MRI of his back and Shanahan said the results were “good.”
As for Hargrave, his injury is a huge blow to the 49ers. The veteran lineman recorded his first sack of the season in the loss to the Rams, along with three total tackles, including one for loss.
Shanahan discussed where the 49ers should go next after losing one of their most valuable defenders.
“We’re still working on that,” Shanahan told reporters. “We’ve got a couple guys on the practice squad that we’ll probably bring back. We’ve got a couple outside guys that are good inside rushers, as far as passing downs and things like that. But we always look at what’s available. But usually you go to your practice squad. And we’re hoping to get Kalia Davis back soon, too, which would help. Not this week, I think, but hopefully soon.”
Davis is currently on the injured list after undergoing surgery in August where the team discovered damage to his kneecap following the season opener against the Tennessee Titans.
The 49ers currently have four defensemen on their practice squad: Evan Anderson, Alex Barrett, TY McGill and Sam Okuayinonu.
Okuayinonu was promoted from the practice squad for the game against the Rams and recorded one sack.
While Hargrave is expected to miss significant time, Shanahan has not ruled out a return if the 49ers advance deep into the playoffs.
“I think so, but whether you tear it partially or tear it completely, we recommend surgery, so if you do have surgery, it’s usually at least a couple of months,” Shanahan said. “If there was a chance, it would have to be late in the playoffs.”
The 49ers entered the season expecting to play until early February, but as injuries mount, that goal is becoming increasingly difficult.
