5 teens arrested after stolen car chase ends with crash into fence in Medford

On July 4, authorities arrested five teenagers on suspicion of leading officers on a chase in a stolen car and crashing it in a residential area.

According to Medford police, around 11 a.m. they received a call from an employee at DICK’s Sporting Goods on Mystic Valley Parkway reporting multiple suspects shoplifting. The suspects then fled in a vehicle on Riverside Avenue. It is unknown how much merchandise was taken.

The employee provided police with the vehicle’s license plate number, and dispatchers determined the vehicle had been stolen earlier that morning in Belmont.

Officers spotted the car driving on Riverside Avenue and activated their flashing lights to stop the vehicle.

The car fled at a high rate of speed onto Commercial Street and then onto Route 16 heading west, police said. The vehicle continued onto Winthrop Street and then onto High Street, where it eventually crashed into a fence on Alto Drive, a dead-end street.

Two teenage suspects were arrested in the vehicle, while three others fled the scene, officials said. One suspect was arrested shortly after, while officers later found the two remaining suspects hiding in the area.

There were no injuries in the incident.

Susan Sarno says she was home when the teens crashed their car into the fence.

“It was horrible,” she said. “Totally unexpected.”

Sarno told reporters she was glad no one was injured in the crash, as it could have been much worse.

“My neighbor has a baby,” she said. “Thankfully they were gone. There are all these things that could have happened that didn’t.”

Charges are currently pending against the five teenagers.
