5 things you need to know before the Balloon Party

October 4 – As temperatures drop and the chill of autumn breezes blow through the state, people prepare for the Balloon Fiesta, the largest event in New Mexico. For first-time visitors, here are five things you need to know before visiting the Balloon Fiesta.

1) Dress warmly

Balloon Fiesta starts early in the morning and since the event takes place in October, the mornings will be cold and windy. Dressing in layers will keep the cold out and as the sun rises higher in the sky you can peel off each layer. It is best to bring a hat, sweatshirt, long-sleeved shirt, warm pants and a pair of gloves. It is also advisable to bring a good pair of walking shoes.

2) Get there early

The crowds of the Balloon Fiesta can reach more than 80,000 people per day. It takes time to park and get onto the field, especially when there is a lot of traffic, so the sooner you go the better. Gates open at 4:30 AM for morning events and at 3:00 PM for evening events.

3) Bring a blanket or lawn chairs

There is a limited number of seats available at the Balloon Fiesta. Garden chairs and blankets are allowed on the field and provide a comfortable place to sit.

4) Prepare to search coolers and other items

Coolers are allowed at the Balloon Fiesta. Feel free to bring snacks, coffee or a bottle of water to enjoy the Balloon Fiesta. All bags and coolers are searched. Glasses and alcohol are not allowed.

5) Rideshare or park and drive

With nearly a million people visiting Albuquerque to watch the Balloon Fiesta, traffic will be heavy. If you don’t want to be stuck in traffic, there are several park-and-ride locations in the city. For those who do drive, leave early or be prepared to wait in traffic. Parking costs $20.
