Brockton City Council passes laws cracking down on homeless encampments
The Brockton City Council passed new laws against camping and loitering on Tuesday. The rules establish a process for removing homeless encampments from public land and impose fines that can lead to jail time. Brett Ferreira, a homeless man who came to City Hall to protest the measures, was unimpressed. He called imposing fines and arrests the “laziest option you can take.” City councilors who supported the new rules pushed back on the idea that they criminalize homelessness. Supporters say the laws target behavior, not a group of people.

The tool has an awkward name: accessory dwelling. It is a small unit that is separate or attached to your home. The concept is not new. You may know it as an “in-law unit” or a “granny flat.” The new state law requires cities and towns to allow this as part of Governor Maura Healey’s push for more housing.

A new restaurant called Brickstone Brewhouse Tavern will replace The Great American Pub in Raynham and open in the coming months at 1736 Broadway. “We want to bring a warm, different, eclectic vibe,” says Irene Saxonis, co-owner of Brickstone Brewhouse Tavern, who, with her husband Dean, also co-owns the popular Raynham base barrels & boards.

Veterans Got in line an hour and a half early. Some use walkers, some use wheelchairs, some wear their military uniforms, some wear military hats. “We opened the doors early and gave out 50 turkeys to those veterans because I couldn’t keep them waiting that long,” Carlo Crocetti said. Crocetti’s Butcher Shop in East Bridgewater distributed hundreds of free turkeys to local military personnel, veterans and veteran families on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
