PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A 50-year-old man was shot multiple times and killed in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia on Wednesday evening, police said.
Authorities responded to the 2100 block of South 26th Street around 5:39 p.m. and said a 50-year-old man had been shot multiple times in the body.
The man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and police said he died from his injuries. He was pronounced dead just before 6 p.m
After the shooting, multiple bullet marks were scattered at 26th and Jackson streets in Grays Ferry.
“A young lady came into the building because she was running from the gunshots and she informed us that there was a shooting here and I asked her to call her mother and then a lockdown was held until we could be released. ” says Shanelle Coleman, vice president of Outreach and Programs at the nearby Boys & Girls Club.
Coleman knew exactly what to do when the shooting happened and said it was unfortunately not the first time she had been in this situation. Her main priority was the safety of the children, and the club works as a family to make that possible.
“It’s just something I really know how to do,” Coleman said. “Keep everyone separated and away from the doors. Lock them up and wait. It’s getting rushed, you know? You have to do everything according to protocol and make sure everyone is safe, and then call the parents.”
Meanwhile, police say they had access to Philadelphia Housing Authority cameras and police real-time crime cameras, which captured the entire shooting.
Coleman said the Boys & Girls club team members do their best to help the children cope with gun violence.
“We don’t talk to them about death,” Coleman said. “We’re just trying to make sure they know it’s a safe haven. It doesn’t matter where you are. If you know you can get into the club, the doors are always open.”
Police say they are still looking for the person responsible, but say they know who it is. They say they are still working on a motive.
