6 people injured after carnival ride overturns during 4th of July celebration in Washington state

Six people were injured Wednesday night when a ride at an Independence Day fair in Washington state overturned, officials said.

The city of Oak Harbor, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of Seattle, said in a statement on Facebook that the six people suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

A city spokesman did not immediately respond to a question about which ride had toppled or how many people were inside. A fairgoer told CBS affiliate KIRO 7 that the ride was called The Cyclone.

Images posted to Oak Harbor’s Facebook page show a spinning swing collapsed and lying on its side.

The city said the attraction was immediately closed and the fair would remain closed for the rest of the evening.

The city said it would work closely with the vendor to conduct thorough inspections Thursday to determine what caused the ride to tip over and prevent future incidents.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents and visitors,” Oak Harbor Police Chief Tony Slowik said in the city’s statement. “Our priority is to thoroughly investigate this incident and take all necessary actions to maintain the highest safety standards.”
