A 77-year-old man died and two teenagers were hospitalized after a crash in Boyle Heights Thursday evening.

The two-car collision happened near the intersection of East 4th Street and South Fresno Street around 9:30 p.m. Security camera footage from a car repair shop shows a black Mercedes-Benz crashing into a smaller Honda sedan.

The crash killed Honda driver Jose Francisco Trevizo, 77, immediately. He was just blocks from his home when the Mercedes hit him while making a left turn.

Sal Melendez grew up with Trevizo. He said the older man was a widower and a devoted grandfather. Melendez’s wife, Monique, said Trevizo was returning from his favorite bakery.

The two teenagers in the Mercedes remain in critical condition. Witnesses claimed they were speeding, but Los Angeles police have not determined a cause.
