What the experts say
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: “With the summer driving season upon us, average gasoline prices have increased in some areas and decreased in others. Most states are seeing prices so far slightly below their 2024 peak, with some refinery issues in the Great Lakes pushing prices there, while other areas like the West Coast have seen notable relief with more on the way. June is generally a month of smooth sailing, as we see gas prices drop in most areas, and that’s a trend that seems most likely for motorists, barring any unexpected problems at the refinery or a tropical storm developing. The national average during Memorial Day was down very slightly compared to last year; after adjusting for inflation, prices fell by about 10 cents per gallon. Not a terrible way to start the summer!”

There is an app that helps: The GasBuddy app is built to show prices to motorists around it, and a fuel tracker can keep users informed of stations that may or may not have fuel based on changes in supply.
