North Korea sends a fleet of balloons containing feces to South Korea

According to multiple reports, North Korea has sent a fleet of balloons containing feces and waste to South Korea.

Balloons containing waste, believed to be sent by North Korea, hang from electrical wires as South Korean army soldiers stand guard in Muju, South Korea, on May 29, 2024. In another sign of tensions between the war-divided rivals, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, North Korea has also been flying large numbers of waste balloons towards the South since Tuesday evening, in apparent retaliation against South Korean activists for flying across the border with anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets.

“As already warned by the [North Korean] Deputy Minister of National Defense, from the night of May 28, a large amount of waste paper and garbage will be spread along the border and in the deep parts of the ROK,” read a statement from the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong -un, Kim Yo Jong. This was reported by the state news agency KCNA. “According to the [South Korean] media, waste paper and waste were not only found in the border area [North Korea] but also in Seoul and other parts of [South Korea].”

“The Joint Chiefs of Staff of the [South Korean] puppet army said that [North Korea] scatters a large number of balloons [South Korea] last night,” the statement continued. “It was pressing [North Korea] to immediately stop such act and claim that it is a clear violation of international law, an act that threatens the security of [South Korean] people and an unethical and vile act.”

According to The Associated Press, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North sent balloons containing trash toward the South starting Tuesday in response to activists from South Korea sending anti-North leaflets across the border.

South Korea’s military also said that about 260 balloons had been discovered in several parts of the country on Wednesday afternoon, according to the AP. According to the military, the balloons carried various types of waste and manure.
