West Pullman man, 18, charged in shooting of cousin, 12, authorities say

A West Pullman man who allegedly shot his 12-year-old nephew in the chest earlier this month was charged with attempted murder Monday, authorities said.

Chicago police have charged Deandre Warren, 18, with attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated abuse of a child.

Prosecutors said he fired a pistol equipped with a laser function at his younger cousin, wounding him in the arm, chest and abdomen.

Warren fled the scene shortly after the Aug. 5 shooting in the North Kenwood neighborhood, prosecutors said. Court documents say other family members, including children, were also present at the time of the shooting. Police said they arrested him Friday in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood on the South Side.

During a hearing Monday morning, Cook County Judge Thomas Nowinski ordered Warren held in jail pending trial, records show. Warren is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 30.
