Smorgasburg Miami is closing, but that doesn’t mean it’s over anytime soon.
The New York City open-air weekend market, which opened in Wynwood in March 2022, will close for about a month, with August 31 as its final day.
Owner Gaston Becherano, who calls the location at 2600 NW Second Ave. a “Disneyland for food,” said after two and a half years it was time for an update.
“We’ve been operating non-stop for the past few years and wanted to use this short break in September to make Smorgasburg as exciting as possible,” he said.
Leisure improvements include the addition of more seating, new landscaping and — perhaps most importantly — more shade. The outdoor market could get steamy during Miami’s endless summer.
The venue is also opening five new spots for vendors who want to appear at the market each weekend. In addition to the five new spots to be filled, there are 25 returning vendors, plus 10 new vendors who have already been confirmed.
The venue is scheduled to reopen the weekend of September 28-29, but before that, it will host a “Hui Hou! End of Summer Luau” on Saturday, August 31. The event runs from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., with live music after 7 p.m. Vendors will be offering specials throughout the night.
Smorgasburg Miami is a sister to the original Smorgasburg in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The smaller Smorgasburg on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach closed earlier this summer.
