NEW YORK –Several people were shot in New York City West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn on Monday, police reported.

No suspect has been arrested.

Five people were shot when a gunman in Crown Heights “fired his weapon multiple times into a crowd,” New York Police Chief John Chell said.

It happened around 1:45 p.m. on Eastern Parkway between Classon and Franklin Avenues.

Two of the shooting victims were in critical condition. The others were expected to survive, police said.

“This was an intentional act by one person against a group of people. We absolutely do not have an active shooter or anything like that walking around Eastern Parkway right now. The parade is ongoing. It will continue into later tonight,” Chell said.

The parade is a Labor Day tradition in Brooklyn and is considered one of the borough’s most important. biggest events of the year.
