Firefighters rescue man from Leaning Tower of Pisa

PISA, Italy (KMID/KPEJ) – Italian firefighters rushed to the aid of a tourist who fell ill on the Leaning Tower of Pisa on Wednesday.

Crews used a crane to lift the man on a stretcher from the sixth floor of the tower as hundreds of curious tourists looked on. Firefighters said the 45-year-old Sri Lankan had suffered a heart attack.

Tuscany’s most famous bell tower was completed in 1372, after 177 years of construction. But from the day it was finished, it began to lean, and over the years it continued to lean until a restructuring project in the 1990s stabilized it.

To this day, the tower continues to inspire intrigue and wonder among tourists and Italians who contemplate this strange and beautiful structure. A feat of engineering that seems to defy gravity, the Leaning Tower of Pisa has a 4-degree incline and despite the steep climb, it can attract around 1,600 tourists a day during peak season.

The tower is said to bring bad luck to students, as for every level they reach, it takes them a year longer to graduate.
