Sunday morning some fog patches, then sunny with clouds throughout the Philadelphia area

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — After a foggy but mostly sunny sky on Saturday, we’ll have clear skies tonight with lows between 10 and 17 degrees.

Like Saturday, Sunday starts off with patchy fog, calm winds, and slightly higher humidity. Most of the fog will be gone by 9 a.m., with mostly sunny skies returning to the entire Delaware Valley. Highs will be slightly cooler, with most areas in the low to mid 80s.

The average maximum temperature at this time of year is now even 27 degrees Celsius.

We are looking at a return of rain to the area, which is planned for Tuesday night into Wednesday, with a stalled frontal boundary to our south. Located along the southeast coast, it will be the focus for the potential development of a low pressure area that could become tropical early next week. Since we now have Tropical Storm Gordon out in the open Atlantic, this system, if it were to become a tropical storm, would be named Helene. As of Saturday night, there is a 50% chance of it developing into a named system.

The forecast models are mixed on how this system will potentially develop, but there is enough consistency in some models to keep an eye on it. While the center of the low pressure system currently looks set to remain south of the area, it could send a plume of moisture into our area, bringing a chance for rain late Tuesday into Wednesday. That system could stall and fizzle out overhead, leaving things unsettled with a chance for showers through Friday. There remains a fair amount of uncertainty in the forecast until then, but the trend is for rain chances to increase again across much of the area.

While it may not be what everyone wants, some parts of the region could use some rain from a drought perspective. The latest drought monitor shows parts of Burlington and Atlantic County in New Jersey are now in moderate drought. While much of the region is still in surplus for the year, the last few weeks have been unusually dry for this time of year.

The NEXT Weather Team will continue to monitor the chance of rain until mid-next week or when our NEXT Weather maker starts to take shape. Until then, enjoy this great weather through the weekend.
