The Clarion Ledger’s Jackson Metro Student of the Week column highlights the exceptional achievements of local high school students, both academically and otherwise.

Every week you can vote for one winner from five nominees.

Read about this week’s nominees and then vote in the poll below. The poll closes Thursday at 12:00. Winners will be announced each week on Friday morning.

Each person can vote once per hour per device.

Nominees

Nadia Davis: Nadia Davis is a ninth-grader in the Jackson-Tougaloo Early College High School program. Davis is known as a hardworking, caring, ambitious student. Her lowest grade during midterms was a 97. She has a heart to help and is not ashamed to stand up for what is right, even if it is not popular with her peers. Her goals are to become a gynecologist and a professional ballerina.

Lindan Garner: Jackson Prep senior Lindan Garner is preparing for a life in government and public service. Garner recently returned from a summer trip to Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., and was one of two contestants chosen by his Boys State peers to represent Mississippi. Closer to home, Garner is vice president of his senior class and was recently named to Jackson Prep’s 30+ ACT Club. He previously served on the Gluckstadt Mayor’s Youth Council and currently serves as a student ambassador for the Mississippi Secretary of State. Garner was recognized as the Most Effective Attorney in the 2024 Mock Trial Competition and is the current Speaker of the House for the Mississippi Youth Legislature.

Ryleigh Gary: Ryleigh Gary is a freshman at Callaway High School. She took Algebra I in 8th grade and passed the state test with a level four. Gary is now in geometry as a 9th grader who is learning and growing. In her AP biology class, she enjoys testing different surfaces for bacteria. Gary is known for his kind and thoughtful smile that brightens up any day.

Raivyn Lewis: Raivyn Lewis is a sophomore at Forest Hill High School. As a student at the Academic and Performing Arts Complex, Lewis maintains a 4.0 in basketball. She is always willing to go above and beyond her peers and always greets others with a smile. Lewis participates in student council, basketball, and is a new member of JROTC.

Roelmer Matias: Roelmer Matias, a junior at Canton High School, came to class and missed the first two weeks of instruction, but quickly caught up. Matias demonstrates his growth mindset through his hard work, perseverance, and ability to balance his schoolwork, playing kicker on the school soccer team, and through the genuine kindness and respect he shows to his peers and teachers.
