An iconic Boise donut shop will serve its last bacon maple bar next month.
DK Donuts, 1300 W. State St., will close Oct. 27, owner Angkearot Long said.
On Tuesday, Long was given a 30-day notice of termination by the landlord after negotiations on a new lease fell through, he said.
Long acquired DK Donuts in 2004 before purchasing the company in 2009, he said. The local, independently owned donut shop has been a fixture on State Street since the last century.
Long said he didn’t know what year DK Donuts appeared at that location, but Idaho Statesman archives go back to 1994.
Beloved for its bacon maple bar, DK Donuts is a go-to that seemed like it would always exist in Boise. News of the impending closure spread quickly among customers, Long said, even spreading online.
“A lot of people are angry,” he said.
But there is good news. Long is looking for another possible DK Donuts location in Boise. And he plans to open a donut shop in Nampa at 200 12th Ave. early next year. S., near the Nampa Public Library.
After years of getting out of bed at 2 a.m. to go to work — and watching his three children work at DK before heading off to college — Long has many fond memories, he said.
But the new Nampa store will also be a family affair. His cousin will transition from working at DK in Boise to running the Nampa donut shop, he said.
DK Donuts has a month-to-month lease, while negotiations continue for a new ten-year agreement. But significantly higher rents and repairs to the building and parking lot were a dealbreaker, he said.
It’s part of the restaurant business.
“It happens,” he said. “So what can we do?”
