FLORHAM PARK, NJ — Todd Downing replaces Nathaniel Hackett as the New York Jets’ offensive play-caller.
Jeff Ulbrich, named after interim head coach the resignation of Robert Salehannounced the changes Thursday as the Jets geared up for a big Week 6 AFC East game with the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
“After much time to think about it, and after not making this decision easy in any way, shape or form, I am going to make Todd Downing the play caller for the New York Jets,” Ulbrich said. “This is more of a byproduct of a different view of things. I’m not saying it’s a better or worse view of things in any way.”
‘Just a different view of things’
Downing was the Jets’ passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Hackett is in his second season as the team’s offensive coordinator.
“But it’s just a different way of looking at things. A fresh approach,” Ulbrich said in preparation for the primetime game at MetLife Stadium that will determine first place in the division.
Ulbrich said he will remain the Jets’ defensive coordinator.
Start with an inconsistent start
Hackett’s work has been criticized by fans and many in the media, who felt the Jets needed to change their approach.
“Ultimately, Todd will have full say in the game plan and ultimately the actions executed in the game,” Ulbrich said.
The offense with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback was inconsistent at a 2-3 start. The team did not perform well, especially in the last two games.
Ulbrich said Rodgers, who has a good relationship with Hackett since their time together in Green Bay, “understood” the decision and supported it. Rodgers refused allegations that he had a hand in Saleh’s dismissal.
