MINNEAPOLIS – A rare comet will pass by Earth this month and on Sunday evening a Minnesotan had the chance to take a snapshot of it.

According to NASA, the comet has an orbit of 80,000 years. This year it approaches the inner solar system for the first time in recorded history. On October 12, it came within 45 million miles of Earth, marking its closest approach until its distant return.
It was discovered last year by astronomers at an observatory in China, NASA says. The peak visibility occurred last week, but astronomers say it is possible to see it until the end of the month.
For those who want to try it, NASA suggests choosing a dark vantage point just after nightfall.
