The dog was found alive in the trash with its throat slit, Sacramento officials say. Woman arrested

Sacramento County deputies arrested a Carmichael woman late Wednesday on suspicion of slitting her dog’s throat and dumping it in the garbage, where the pooch remained for two days until he was rescued.

A resident of an apartment complex on the 4000 block of Manzanita Avenue called 911 around 9 p.m. Wednesday to report a dog in a trash can with a torn neck, according to a news release.

Investigators identified the suspect, a 41-year-old woman, as the dog’s owner, officers said. The woman lived with another dog and a cat.

The woman told officers she slit the dog’s throat on Monday because “her life would be easier if she only had to care for one dog,” the release said. She put the injured dog in a shopping bag and threw it in the trash on Tuesday, officers said.

Sacramento County Animal Control staff provided medical attention to the dog and took custody of the second dog, the release said.
