Initial claims for unemployment benefits in Michigan fell last week compared to the week before, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday.
New unemployment claims, a measure of layoffs, fell to 8,357 in the week ending Oct. 12, down from 16,169 the week before, the Labor Department said.
U.S. unemployment claims fell to 241,000 last week, down 19,000 claims from 260,000 the week before on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Nebraska saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing 91.0%. The Virgin Islands, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decline in new claims, with claims falling 53.1%.
