Volunteers needed for the Emmet County Victim Services Unit

EMMET COUNTY — The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office is looking for interested volunteers to serve with the county’s Victim Assistance Unit.

According to the department’s website, the unit is made up of a group of volunteers dedicated to helping victims cope with a crisis or a crime against them.

The three most important roles of volunteers are:

  • Provide immediate comfort and assistance to the victims

  • If necessary, refer to the appropriate authorities and services

  • Act as an intermediary for the victims, their families, officers and emergency services

Volunteers are typically assigned five to six twelve-hour shifts per month. Services run from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM

Volunteers on the team are interviewed and must pass a background check. Then they will attend a weekend of training organized by the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should submit an application to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department, 450 Bay St. in Petoskey.

Applications are available in the office or downloaded online at emmetcounty.org/courts-sheriff/sheriff/victims-services-unit.
