Jury cannot reach verdict on murder charges; Dayton man accused of shooting and killing teen

Oct. 26—A jury was unable to reach a verdict on the murder charges against a Dayton man accused of shooting and killing an 18-year-old in April while he was running away.

Isaiah DeAnthony Wood, 37, was acquitted Friday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court of tampering with evidence, but the jury was hung on the other 10 charges: two counts each of murder, assault and discharging a firearm at or into the near trespassing and four counts of having weapons while under disability.

Jurors began their deliberations at 8:30 a.m. Friday after a four-day trial in Judge Mary Wiseman’s courtroom. According to Shelli Brock, the judge’s staff attorney, the jury returned its verdict around 5:15 p.m.

The gunshot victim in the case was identified by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office as Larod Allen DeLong.

Dayton police found DeLong lying in the street after responding to a shooting around 6 a.m. April 6 in the 2400 block of Auburn Avenue.

Wood’s doorbell camera repeatedly alerted him to movement in his driveway in the early morning hours. Doorbell camera footage showed him going outside with a gun and firing more than 40 shots at two people who were trying to break into his car, police said.

At least two bullets hit DeLong, including one that struck DeLong in the back of the head and killed him as he ran, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The house across the street was hit by at least one bullet and another bullet hit the garage of another house, the prosecutor’s office said.

Investigators reported finding four firearms during a search of Wood’s home. The copy believed to have been used in the shooting was found altered in a kitchen cabinet, according to an affidavit filed in Dayton Municipal Court. Officers also found a drum-style magazine in a small storage bin in an adjacent room, police said.
