Family is mourning the death of a 23-year-old from injuries sustained in the Fort Worth shooting

A North Texas family is mourning the loss of a 23-year-old Everman man who recently died from complications from injuries he suffered during an Oct. 3 shooting.

De’Kiah Montgomery died Oct. 13 at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Montgomery’s family organized a GoFundMe to help cover the 23-year-old’s medical and funeral expenses. Relatives described him as “a big teddy bear” who was fiercely protective of his family, including his twin nieces.

Police say Montgomery was one of two people shot as they left a party in Fort Worth the night of Oct. 3.

Police said the victims left the scene in a vehicle and after a short drive were involved in a crash near US 287 and Mitchell Boulevard.

Twenty-nine-year-old Kinte Johnson of Fort Worth was shot in the torso and died inside the vehicle in the 3100 block of Wesleyan Drive South, officials said. The second victim, Montgomery, was taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.
