Nov. 2 – The federal government has awarded Maine more than $37.5 million for its Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for the upcoming fiscal year.
Additionally, tribes in Maine will receive more than $1.4 million in LIHEAP funds.
LIHEAP is a program of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that helps low-income households pay their utility bills, make repairs to heating and cooling systems, and weatherproof their homes.
The funds are part of a $3.7 billion federal investment across the country.
More than 45,000 households in Maine are receiving assistance through LIHEAP, according to a press release from U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree’s office.
LIHEAP is administered by states. Households can apply through their local Community Action Agency, which they can find through the Maine State Housing Authority.
