Troopers ID 2 dead after U-Haul crashes into back of semi

UPDATE at 3:50 PM:

Troopers have identified the two people killed after a crash on US-35 in Greene County Saturday morning.

Around 8:45 a.m., the Ohio State Highway Patrol was called to US-35 and Valley Road for a crash.

An initial investigation revealed that a semitrailer was stopped at a red light at eastbound US-35 and North Valley Road when a U-Haul pulling a U-Haul trailer rear-ended it.

The driver of the U-Haul, identified as Val Vern McLuff, 78, and his passenger Veronica Smith, 64, both of Wisconsin, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.

A dog was also killed in the accident.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured.

State troopers told the News Center 7 crew at the scene that high speed and drugs or alcohol were not believed to have played a role in the crash.
