Strong winds swept through Northern California overnight and Wednesday, causing some damage and keeping firefighters on alert.

According to the National Weather Service, offshore wind speeds are between 20 and 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. Locations above 8,000 feet saw wind gusts in excess of 75 miles per hour.

The Bay Area and Northern California have been under a red flag warning since Tuesday and will last until 7 a.m. Thursday. The Weather Service said the wind combined with low humidity created critical fire conditions and prompted warnings for all interior areas of the Bay Area, the Sacramento Valley and higher elevations of the Central Coast.

The wind appeared to cause the scaffolding of a building in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood to partially collapse. The San Francisco Fire Department said in a social media post Wednesday morning that the scaffolding failure on the 1900 block of Broadway was “likely a wind-related issue.” due to wind speeds of 30 km/h in the area.

Circumstances also caused one new round of public safety outages at Pacific Gas and Electric. Thousands of outages started across the region on Tuesday evening and lasted until Wednesday.

The Weather Service also issued a wind advisory for the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
