Vice President Kamala Harris says in concession speech: ‘Sometimes the fight lasts a while’

Vice President Kamala Harris conceded defeat Wednesday afternoon in a speech to supporters at Howard University, her alma mater in Washington, D.C.

In her 12-minute speech, Harris called on her supporters not to give up. “While I concede this election,” she said, “I am not conceding the strife this campaign has fueled.

“When we lose an election, we accept the results,” the first woman of color to win the nomination of a major political party told the crowd, drawing an implicit contrast to former President Donald Trump, who refused to commit to the to accept the election results.

Harris called Trump earlier on Wednesday, conceding the historic election after a hard-fought race for the right to lead the nation. According to a senior Harris aide, she discussed with Trump the importance of a peaceful transition of power and the presidency for all Americans.
