Police release photos of suspected shooter in Navy Pier double homicide

CHICAGO (CBS) — Police have released surveillance images of the suspect the killing of two former colleagues at Navy Pier earlier this week.

On Tuesday around 1:15 p.m., police responded to a shooting on the north side of Navy Pier, where drivers enter to enter pier garages. Two employees of Levy Restaurants were shot dead in an administration office in the loading dock at Navy Pier

Police suspect a disgruntled former colleague of the victims entered the loading dock and opened fire, shooting two men. Lamont Johnson, 51, of Lansing, and Peter Jennings, 47, of Chicago, were both shot in the head and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where they died, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

According to police, the gunman fled on public transport.

On Thursday afternoon, police released surveillance images of the suspected shooter. One of the images shows the suspect aboard a CTA bus. It is unclear where the other two photos were taken. Two of them show him wearing a black North Face hoodie. The other shows him in a t-shirt.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooter to contact Area 3 detectives at 312-744-8261.

Police sources report this there was a dispute in the loading dock at Navy Pier the day of the shootingafter a chef at Levy Restaurants was fired. The suspected shooter was also an employee of Levy.

Sources said a manager who had worked for Levy for 20 years was the intended target, while the other victim was a new employee who had nothing to do with the situation. It was not immediately clear which of the two victims was the manager and which was the new employee.

Police said detectives continued their investigation Wednesday to find the shooter and determine his motive.

“They have already done a great job trying to take this individual into custody, but we will have to take this individual into custody and continue the investigation to provide additional details,” said Chicago Police Chief Antoinette Ursitti.

In a statement, Levy Restaurants said in part: “We are absolutely devastated by today’s tragic events and the shocking loss of two of our family members. Our hearts break for their families and loved ones, whose lives have been changed forever.”
