CHICAGO (CBS) — An organization is ensuring thousands of local families and veterans in Chicago can celebrate Thanksgiving by any means necessary.

The Black McDonald’s Operators Association of Chicago is giving away 3,000 turkeys at McDonald’s locations on the south and west sides of the city next week in an event called Food for the Body and Spirit.

This is the 24th year that the competition has been held.

“It’s a pleasure to see everyone here today. We’re passing out turkeys. We’re passing out bread. We passed out some donuts this morning,” said Akins Aknnagbe of the Black McDonald’s Operators Association, “and we can’t wait to do this for five more times at different locations.”

Along with the turkeys, the organization gave away the usual sides – and a pair of gloves. The group also provided a special VIP line for veterans.

A giveaway will be held on Monday, in observance of Veterans Day, at the McDonald’s at 740 E. 47th St. in the Bronzeville neighborhood, and on Tuesday at the McDonald’s at 3639 169th St. in Hammond, Indiana.
