Report: Bears players went to Eberflus and Poland instead of Shane Waldron – and some wanted a QB change

On Tuesday, the Bears dumped offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. It was reportedly preceded by an attempt by some players to make it happen.

Marc Zilverman van Waddle & Silvy on ESPN 1000 posted this bit of insight on Twitter: “After speaking with a few people with knowledge of the situation, players went to [coach] Matt Eberflus & [G.M.] Ryan Poland asking them to make a change with the offensive coordinator.”

The number of players lobbying for change was not specified, but if it happened, it was apparently enough to make something happen.

In September, tight end Marcedes Lewis told Fox’s Jay Glazer that there were multiple players went straight to Waldronand asked him to coach them more aggressively.

Silverman’s tweet had another wrinkle: “There have been a few veteran players asking for it too [Tyson] Bagant begins.”

That last part is a doozy. And if it’s true, maybe it won’t go away. Especially if the elevation of Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator makes no difference in the performance of starting quarterback Caleb Williams.

Eberflus told reporters Monday that Williams will remain the starter. And despite all the changes the Bears could make, they won’t be benching or otherwise giving up on Williams anytime soon.

The offseason goal will likely be to find a head coach who has a plan to get the most out of the quarterback, who arrived to much fanfare, and with the promise of becoming the franchise’s first franchise quarterback since Sid Luckman.
