WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn told reporters on Thursday that he “absolutely” wants to review an unreleased congressional ethics report on Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general .

Gaetz resigned his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, which would end an ethics committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illegal drug use. He has denied wrongdoing.

Gaetz was also investigated by the Justice Department for nearly three years over sex trafficking allegations involving a 17-year-old girl. His office said in 2023 that prosecutors told him he would not face criminal charges.

Cornyn told reporters there “shouldn’t be any restrictions” on the Senate investigation as lawmakers consider whether to confirm Gaetz as head of the Justice Department, “including what the House Ethics Committee has produced.”

Asked if that means he wants to see the ethics report, he replied: “Absolutely.”
