Islamabad/Berlin – Afghanistan’s ambassador to Berlin and the country’s consul general in Bonn resigned in separate statements on Monday, citing challenges in consular services and political pressure from the German government.
Yama Yari, the Afghan ambassador to Germany, and Said Lutfullah Sadat, the Afghan consul general in Bonn, said the missions are facing difficulties in providing consular services due to restrictions imposed by the Taliban government in Kabul and under pressure from the host country. .
Diplomats sent to Germany by former President Ashraf Ghani’s government have said they are resigning as a result of these challenges and the political reality on the ground.
These decisions follow the Taliban government’s announcement that it would no longer recognize the consular services of some of the previous government’s diplomatic missions in Western countries, including the Afghan missions in Berlin and Bonn.
In recent months, the Afghan diplomatic missions in London and Oslo were closed at the request of host countries.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban government has sought international recognition and assistance, but has also faced criticism over its governance practices. As a result, no country has yet officially recognized its government.
The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021 after the departure of international forces and a lightning military offensive that brought them to Kabul.
