One in four people attacked by a dog in Boston dies from injuries, police say

One in four people mauled in a dog attack in Boston on Monday died from their injuries, investigators announced Tuesday morning.

Officers responding to a report of people being bitten by a dog near Dennison Street in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood shortly before 5 p.m. found a woman with life-threatening injuries, according to Boston police.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was rushed to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Authorities said the attack happened inside a home and that the two victims owned the dog.

Two officers who responded were also bitten by the dog, which police said prompted another officer to shoot the animal. It was not immediately clear whether the attacking dog was killed.

Both officers were transported to an area hospital and are expected to be OK.

Surveillance video obtained by Boston 25 News shows the danger that greeted officers before three shots were fired in the cul-de-sac.

“I heard two shots and I saw that the dog was down. About a minute later, less than that, I heard a third shot,” said a neighbor. “It was terrible.”

Boston 25 News later learned that the attack took place at the multi-family home owned by civil rights leader Jean McGuire.

McGuire said she was not home when the attack occurred in a first-floor unit.

Police could not provide an update on the dog’s condition and would not comment on the dog’s breed.

Boston Animal Control transported the shot dog and also took three additional dogs from the scene.

An investigation is active and ongoing.
