Nov. 20—CUMBERLAND — High-tech cameras could soon be used to target speeding drivers in the city.
Representatives of RedSpeed USA, which uses high-resolution video cameras and infrared emitters, discussed their services with members of the Cumberland City Council on Tuesday.
“We are the gold standard in what we do,” says RedSpeed director Robert Super.
The company has more than 30 contracts with government agencies in Maryland, including Annapolis, Easton and Hancock, and works in several other states.
“The focus is on public safety,” Super said.
“Our programs do not cost the municipality anything,” he said, adding that about 60% of the money generated from tickets goes to the municipalities the company serves. “Our compensation structure is self-motivating… we get paid for what we do.”
Erwin Lanier, program director for RedSpeed Maryland, said the company’s video systems can cover seven lanes and capture multiple license plates simultaneously.
“We maintain our equipment,” he said, adding that RedSpeed also handles the installation of the video system.
Lanier said the company conducted investigations and found significant speed issues in several parts of Cumberland.
In addition, the company spoke with government officials about possible work to monitor Interstate 68 in the city, he said.
Capt. James Burt of the Cumberland Police Department said RedSpeed officials will attend an upcoming city council meeting to provide additional details and answer questions.
“We have a normal speed problem,” he said. “It’s a public safety issue.”
