Nov. 21—GRAND FORKS — As of Thursday afternoon, Nov. 21, there were no updates on who will be Grand Forks’ new police chief, but the city’s human resources director said there could be news before the end of the day Friday.
“We are still in the process,” Tangee Bouvette wrote in an email to the Herald. “Hopefully I will have more information to share with you by the end of the week.”
The lead position opened in September following the retirement of Mark Nelson. He spent more than 30 years with the Grand Forks Police Department, including nearly 10 years leading the agency.
Six finalists
were announced on November 8
but one has since withdrawn its application.
The rest
include three internal candidates: Deputy Chief William “Bill” Macki, Lt. Jeremy Moe and Lt. Derik Zimmel. The other two are Daniel “Danny” Weigel, a UND Police Department patrol commander; and Jason Freedman, a police captain and SWAT commander in Madison, Wisconsin.
Applicants were interviewed all day Monday, and
introduced themselves
to the Grand Forks City Council Monday evening. On Tuesday there were final presentations in the morning, after which the scores were recorded. The interview panel likely gave its recommendations to Mayor Brandon Bochenski, who will make the final hiring decision.
Bouvette sat on the interview panel, alongside Todd Feland, city manager; Tony Hodny, president of the Grand Forks-East Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce; Todd Forkel, CEO of Altru Health System; and Grand Forks Fire Chief Gary Lorenz.
