As the holidays begin, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) will begin emphasized patrols throughout the state.
From November 22 and 23, these patrols will focus on increasing the visibility of officers in the target areas, in particular on monitoring drink driving offences.
District 7 counties, including Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom, will be the initial focus.
WSP advises drivers to make alternate plans to get home if they plan to drink, such as getting a ride from friends, family or a ride-hailing company.
In collaboration with neighboring departments, WSP aims to prevent accidents and get dangerous motorists off the road.
Drivers are also reminded to swerve when they see police car safety lights. Tragically, 32 officers have died after being hit by cars while on duty, according to WSP.
“Go home safely,” the District 7 public information officer said.
This initiative is part of a national holiday emphasis beginning during Thanksgiving week.
