The superintendent of a Long Island school district was arrested Sunday evening and charged with drunken driving in a serious crash in Suffolk County.
Police say Michael Hynes, 53, was driving in Sayville when he tried to make a left turn and struck a motorcyclist, Newsday reported.
The motorcyclist, 63-year-old Alberto Fernandez, suffered serious injuries and was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment, according to Patch.
Hynes announced three weeks ago that he would be resigning from his position as superintendent of the Port Washington Union Free School District, effective Dec. 13. At the time, he said he had a “rare opportunity to work in the private education sector.”
But on Sunday evening, Hynes was driving a 2019 Honda Civic northbound on Railroad Ave. in Sayville when he attempted to turn left onto Depot St. and struck Fernandez, who police said was heading south.
Hynes suffered minor injuries and was transported to the same hospital, Newsday reported. His arraignment was scheduled for Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.
The wreck was one of two notable drunk driving accidents in Suffolk County on Sunday evening. In Babylon, a woman drunkenly crashed into a boat at the local marina, setting a total of four boats on fire, according to police.
